Seed Library

Free seeds for your garden!

What is a Seed Library?

A Seed Library is a collection of plant seeds that we give away to the public for free. This is a brand new collection, introduced in the summer of 2023! The original goal of this project was to share heirloom and organic seeds exclusively, but as the collection grew increasingly popular we have transitioned to a more open model. Now, we accept seeds of heirloom, organic and “regular” stock, all for use in your garden.

Our seeds are currently stored in one of the historic card catalog cabinets that long-time patrons will remember using to search for books! We encourage all interested patrons to read this page and stop in to the Circulation or Reference Desks if you have any questions.

How does it work?

Come on into the Athenaeum and find the Seed Library in the Great Hall, right across from the Circulation Desk.  Browse through our collection or the catalog below at your leisure and take what you’d like. We ask that patrons only take up to three packets per visit, so we can have plenty for everyone. Then, follow the planting instructions on the seed packet and enjoy fresh fruits or veggies throughout the year!

Do I need to return the seeds I borrow?

While you obviously don’t need to return the exact seeds you take from our collection, we encourage you to bring back seeds from the plants you grew successfully! Our Seed Library is able to operate because of the generosity of our neighbors – and we encourage our patrons to share the bounty of their garden with their community.

2024 Inventory:

All of our donated seeds are packets that didn’t sell from 2022 or 2023, so the collection may look very different year to year. All of the donations were randomized selections, and our staff did not select specific varieties. Don’t worry, most seeds are perfectly usable for up to three or four years, so you shouldn’t have any problems getting started!

This year, we’re starting off the season with 221 packets of seeds. Many thanks to this year’s sponsors, including Territorial Seed Company, Fedco Seeds and Victory Seed Company for their generous donations to this project.

Do you accept donations?

Yes! When you have seeds you want to donate, bring them to the Circulation Desk or leave them in the Donations drawers at the bottom of the cabinet. All seeds must be clearly labeled. Any seeds whose identity is questionable will be put in the Mystery Section!

What’s the Mystery Section?

These drawers will be filled with seeds that couldn’t be reliably identified. Why not take a packet or three and grow them in a special plot? It could be zucchini or it could be a zenobia! Who knows what you’ll get?

I have more questions!

Excellent! If you have more questions or want to donate large quantities of seeds or financial resources, please contact our Outreach Librarian Shaina at shorne@westath.org or at (413) 568-7833 ext. 111.

2023 Sponsors

2023 Donors:

We were very excited to begin the Seed Library project thanks to amazing donations from High Mowing Seeds and Seed Savers Exchange, two companies dedicated to selling non-GMO, organic, open-pollinated heirloom seeds. A small selection of our seeds were donated by LiveMonarch.com, which specializes in seed donations that benefit butterfly populations. Later in the season, we received a large, local donation from Rocky’s Ace Hardware!

2024 Sponsors

This year, we thank our donors Territorial Seed Company, Fedco Seeds and Victory Seed Company for their generous donations. It’s thanks to donors like these excellent groups that let us have a Seed Library in the first place!
