WESTFIELD

at the start of the Civil War only 5,600 men were in the militia, by the end of the war, Massachusetts had sent 59,254 soldiers and sailors to fight. Although the period of service could be as little as 3 months, many served more than this- Edwin Peck is one. Westfield's first town meeting concerning the Civil War was on April 29, 1861 when $10,000 was appropriated to pay for equiping volunteers and to support the soldiers families while they were gone.
