Edwin L. Peck joined the Grand Army of the Republic on November 1863 at Newport News. He quickly rose through the ranks due to his bravery and became a first Lieutenant then a brevet captain. He fought in some of the bloodest battles including Drewry's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Petersburg ,Cobb's Hill and South-West Creek in March of 1865.
Inside the front cover of Peck's New Testament reads:" Sargent 27 Mass Newbern NC." The next page read: "Towards Kingston RR Picket April 2nd 1862 1st day Picketing April 4th Co. Clarks Digs Prove a good forage for us. Catch 5, a calf & a lamb. May 11th = Camp near Bash Crk On picket ground over the crk with Lieut. Fowler. Hot! Quiet to avoid being seen. Friday July 4 Newberne research to city and salute Gens F. B., Col H. Bonfire of 100 bbls of tar etc at our camp 10th Comm’s Thurs Nov 1864 Passed seven compaign in Va and are once more back in NC. In camp near Carolina City N.C. under Maj. J. W. Moores. The writer then uses code (possibly Pittman shorthand) with one identifiable date Aug. 20, 1895 Inside back cover reads: "E. L. Peck 1st Lieut. 27 Mass Vols Petersburg VA" |
