Special Collections at the Westfield Athenaeum
The Westfield Athenaeum has some diaries from Westfield residents and is looking to expand its collection. We have "A Stroll along Goose Lane" by Eloise Fowler Salmond, "A Tale of Two Taverns" by Harold Norton Jones, Elizabeth Lamberton Little's "Account of Broad Street," and other reminiscences which, combined with the town histories, help re-create every day life in Westfield in the 1800s. The Athenaeum also has other diaries and scrapbooks from the 1900s through 1940s which are being processed for patron use.
We would like to expand this collection to ensure saving more of the happenings and life of Westfield through the years and up to the present day. We are especially looking for diaries of workers in the whip and tobacco industry and diaries from the 1930s onward. So if you have a diary or scrapbook stuffed in the attic or a drawer that shows the civic or working fabric of Westfield, please consider donating it to the Westfield Athenaeum where it will receive the care and preservation it needs.
If you have any questions, please contact Kate Deviny or Susan Kingra at 413-562-0716.
