The term “lobsterback” was also used by American soldiers to mock their British counterparts. Our sources, however, indicate the coatee is American in origin, and not British, as it was erroneously described when the coat was on display in the museum when it first opened in 1928. It is quite possible that the coatee belonged to a local volunteer militiaman who rode with a horse troop in the Westfield area in the late 1700s. As you might expect from a piece of woolen clothing that is over 200 years old, the coatee is not 100% intact. It is moth-eaten in places and is in need of conservation. Fortunately, the American Textile Museum in Lowell, Mass. has a well-regarded conservation center that will analyze the coat and tell us how best to preserve this relic from the past, which we hope to include in future museum displays.
